Monsieur Spade Sneak Peek: Watch Clive Owen’s Sam Spade Cut a Rival to Shreds With Sharp Verbal Barbs

We wouldn’t want to get into a war of words with Monsieur Spade’s Sam Spade… because we’re not sure we’d get out of it alive.

TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek at this Sunday’s episode (AMC, 9/8c), where the famed private eye played by Clive Owen absolutely decimates his drinking companion at a French jazz club with a barrage of witty insults and thinly veiled threats. His animosity is well-earned, too, because he’s talking to shady crook Philippe Saint-Andre (Jonathan Zaccaï), an ex of Spade’s late lover Gabrielle and the absentee father of Teresa, the young girl Spade is now looking after.

Spade is trying to find out who murdered six nuns at a local convent, and he doesn’t mince words, telling Philippe that he’s “either really dumb, or you’re trying to provoke me, which makes you really dumb.” He continues: “You’re not drunk, you’re not bored and you’re not at all interesting,” adding that he wants to wrap this investigation up quickly so he can get back home to America “where people don’t butter their f–king fruit.”

Philippe fires back that Spade is just an American private eye, “which, in France, gives you about the same legal authority as a rat-catcher.” But Spade isn’t deterred: “In my case, the two jobs are one and the same.”

Elsewhere in this Sunday’s episode, “Spade searches for answers regarding the mysterious young boy that everyone seems to be looking for” and “Samir takes him into hiding, but no one knows what to make of his incessant writing,” per the official description.
