Mona Lisa Daubed With Cake in Environmental Protest

Cake was smeared over the protective glass covering the Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris on May 29, with the person described as being responsible indicating he was an environmental protester.

American Luke Sundberg, who witnessed the incident, tweeted that a man “dressed as an old lady jump[ed] out of a wheel chair and attempted to smash the bullet proof glass of the Mona Lisa” before “smear[ing] cake on the glass.”

The man suspected of being responsible was seen in separate video posted by Sundberg telling bystanders, in French, “Think of the planet… there are people who are destroying the planet, think about that … That’s why I did it.” Credit: Luke Sundberg via Storyful
