KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 — Mohammed Rashdan Mohd Yusof has resigned as the deputy group managing director of Gamuda Berhad effective from today.

Bursa Malaysia announced the boardroom change following the resignation of the 52-year-old from all the company’s directorships after his appointment as Energy Commission chairman.

Bursa Malaysia said he had decided to resign “to focus his attention, energy and effort on his newly appointed role as the chairman of the Energy Commission”.

Mohammed Rashdan had been Gamuda’s deputy managing director since May 1, 2018.

He was then appointed as alternate director to the company’s CEO, Lin Yun Ling, on September 28 that same year.

Free Malaysia Today previously reported that industry players and businesses were frustrated by the government’s silence in the face of concerns of conflict of interest affecting the appointment of the Energy Commission chairman.

Gamuda is a major player in the renewable energy space, and as recently as last December, announced it was spending RM2 billion to grow its renewable energy business.

So far, it has acquired a 30 per cent stake in ERS Energy Sdn Bhd, a company involved in solar energy.

“Other businesses in the renewable energy space are now asking how the government can allow a high-ranking executive in a company in the renewable energy business to also head the regulatory body for the industry.

“In growing its renewable energy business, Gamuda will need to get approvals from the Energy Commission for all sorts of decisions and projects,” a source was quoted as saying in the report.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on April 14 had said that he would check whether there was a conflict of interest in the appointment of Mohammed Rashdan as the Energy Commission chairman.

“I have been alerted about it. There should not be any conflict of interest,” he said.

He said if a conflict of interest is established, he will make the necessary adjustment.
