MOE: In-person private tuition to be suspended from Wednesday
SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Education (MOE) said on Tuesday (18 May) that in-person private tuition and enrichment classes for students aged 18 and below will be suspended from Wednesday to 13 June.
This means that all organisations and individuals offering tuition and enrichment classes – whether academic or otherwise – must shift their lessons online for students in this age group, or suspend them for this period.
“The decision to suspend in-person classes is due to the higher risk of transmission of COVID-19 from the intermingling of students from different schools, and to avoid interactions between tutors and students,” the MOE said in an advisory.
It clarified that classes for students above 18 may still continue in person, subject to safe management measures. However, as in-person singing and wind/brass instrument classes involve a higher risk of virus transmission due to voice projection or intentional expulsion of air, they are to be suspended from Wednesday to 13 June.
Tuition or enrichment centres must also ensure that employees who are able to do so work from home, while employees who must return to the centres for their work are required to abide by safe management rules.
These include health checks, the use of SafeEntry to support contact tracing, wearing of masks at all times and regular cleaning of common facilities and high-touch areas, added MOE.
The move comes two days after the MOE announced that all its students from primary and secondary schools, and junior colleges, will shift to full home-based learning, also from Wednesday. This will be in effect until the end of the current term on 28 May.
Recent COVID-19 cases have been linked to students and teachers from schools as well as tuition centres.
