MLB betting: Addition of Joey Gallo shifts Yankees' postseason odds slightly

The addition of Joey Gallo is improving the Yankees’ postseason odds.

New York swung a trade for Gallo with the Texas Rangers on Wednesday as the Yankees try to boost a lagging offense. The slugger is a needed left-handed bat for the Yankees’ lineup and he’s got an on-base percentage of .379 in addition to his prodigious power.

The Yankees are still on the outside looking in when it comes to the postseason, however. The Yankees are 8.5 games back of the Boston Red Sox for the AL East lead and are 2.5 games back of the Oakland Athletics for the second wild card.

That’s why the Yankees’ BetMGM odds are still pretty long after the Gallo trade. The Yankees were at +2500 to win the World Series and are now at +2200 to win after the trade was reported. Just under 7% of the tickets at BetMGM are on the Yankees to win the World Series title.

New York’s American League odds improved a bit more. The Yankees were at +1400 on Wednesday morning to win the AL and now sit at +1000 to win the league as of Thursday morning. Just over 17% of the handle — the total money wagered — is on the Yankees to win the American League and head to the World Series.

The division odds improved the least because of that sizable deficit. The Yankees were +1300 to win the East on Wednesday and are now at +1100. That’s a bet that a lot of bettors hope somehow hits. Over 26% of tickets and over 40% of the handle is on the Yankees to win the East.
