KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Chendering, student Tengku Mohd Afiq Tengku Muhazan, feared drowned at Pantai Pandak, here yesterday, rarely goes to the beach for a swim.

This was disclosed by his mother, Siti Fatimah Ismail, 48, based on her family’s experiences while holidays or picnics at beaches, and she did not expect her son to bathe in the sea with his friends yesterday.

She said Tengku Mohd Afiq, 20, usually opted to only play on the fringe of the water and also on the beach.

“Afiq (the victim) is a quiet person and not the outdoor type. Prior to this, if he wanted to go anywhere, he would tell me, but this time, he did not do so,” she told reporters when met at the location today.

Meanwhile, the victim’s father Tengku Muhazan Shah Tengku Muhammed, 46, who is self-employed, said he only learned about the incident involving his third child of five siblings after being informed by one of his children after dusk yesterday.

He said two days before the incident, he had contacted Tengku Mohd Afiq to ask his son if he would be home for the semester break.

“The last time Afiq returned home in Kota Bharu, Kelantan was two weeks ago before his semester break. My wife and I felt strange when he brought back all his personal items including toiletries, as he had never done so before,” he said choking with emotion.

Although still shocked and saddened over the incident, Tengku Muhazan Shah said the family accepted any possibility but prayed that their beloved son would be found safe.

Kuala Terengganu Fire and Rescue Station chief Rozizah Abni Hajar said the search and rescue operation now extended to the waters of Kuala Terengganu and Marang by using boats and ships from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM).

In the 6 pm incident yesterday, a trip for a group of 15 UiTM Chendering students to Pantai Pandak turned tragic when Mohd Nor Hishamudin Nor Saidi, 21, and Tengku Mohd Afiq were suddenly swept away by strong currents.
