A surfer who went missing at an Australian beach is now believed to have been the victim of a shark attack, according to authorities.

On Friday, Jan. 3, South Australia Police said in a news release that “Police and Emergency Services crews will continue searching waters at Westall for the body of a man, believed to be the victim of a fatal shark attack.”

“The man’s body is yet to be found and an air, land and water search will be conducted early this morning with resources from Police, SES and local volunteers assisting,” police added.

The department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Lance Appleby — who was surfing at Granites Beach in Streaky Bay on the evening of Thursday, Jan. 2. according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He vanished after he was attacked by a shark, eyewitnesses reportedly told police.

Speaking with the outlet, senior constable Rebecca Stokes said that all signs point to Appleby being killed in the attack.

"There was just no sign of this young man," Stokes said.

She told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that a "brave" good Samaritan used a jetski "immediately after the attack" and recovered the victim's surfboard.

Granites Beach will remain “closed to the public" and any witnesses are asked to contact police, authorities said in the release.

The department noted that they are preparing a report for the local coroner.

According to ABC, the District Council of Streaky Bay released a statement offering condolences to Appleby's loved ones.

"In times like these, it is important to remember that the individual was not only a valued member of our community but also a cherished son, family member and friend," officials said.

They added, "We are hurting and we ask for understanding as we collectively grieve and support one another."
