Minnesota Teen Fatally Struck by Car While Riding His Scooter

A 14-year-old boy was fatally struck while riding on his scooter on Monday, June 3, in Lakeville, Minn., reports KARE 11, Fox 9 and Pioneer Press.

Maxwell Robert Wilson, an eighth grader at Century Middle School, was hit by a vehicle heading westbound as he was crossing 179th Street on his scooter in Lakeville around 3:15 p.m. The street has stop signs for vehicles traveling in north and southbound directions, but there are no stop signs for those traveling east and west on 179th Street, per the Lakeville Police Department’s press release.

After he was hit, Wilson was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center with critical injuries. A helmet wasn’t found at the crash site, reports Pioneer Press. The driver’s identity has not been revealed, but she is an adult female who did not report any injuries. Following the accident, the Lakeville Police Department arrived at the scene with the Lakeville Fire Department, Allina EMS and Minnesota State Patrol.

Due to the extent of his brain injuries, Wilson died two days later on Wednesday, June 5.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Following the news of Wilson’s death, a GoFundMe page, which was first created to assist the Wilson family with medical expenses, has begun raising money for after-life care.

“We are all heartbroken by the tragic loss of Maxwell (Max) Robert Wilson,” read the start of the fundraiser’s information section. “Chad (Father) and Jody (Mother), are heartbroken with the loss of their precious son. Morgan (Sister) has lost her only brother. He was so full of life, happiness, and joy.”

The post continued: “If you were one lucky enough to have known Max, you knew he lit up every room he walked into. Max loved sports, his family, his dogs, his friends, and adventures.”

On Wednesday, the Hennepin County Medical Center hosted a "Hero Walk" in honor of the late teen who was an organ donor. Wilson’s organs could save up to eight lives, and his tissue could assist up to 75 people, per LifeSource Minnesota.

"I can’t imagine what his parents are going through, and his siblings," Mayor Luke Hellier said, per Fox 9. "My heart just goes out to them and our community... our community grieves with Max’s family,” adding, "I just cannot thank their family enough [for making] that courageous decision to be organ donors.”
