PUTRAJAYA, Dec 21 — Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad today said there has been no element of corruption in the government’s multi-billion ringgit flood mitigation plan as claimed by the Opposition.

He said the Finance Ministry has allocated RM11.8 billion to be spent on 33 flood mitigation projects and not crossed RM16.6 billion as alleged by Bersatu information committee member Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard.

“Chegubard's accusations are baseless, and show his lack of understanding of the government’s procurement process and budget allocation,” he said in a statement.

He added that the allegations were defamatory and that he will taking civil legal action against the Opposition politician soon.

Nik Nazmi then went on to say that almost all the government’s flood mitigation projects for the year were still going through the tender process.

“And for this year, 19 projects have been issued a Letter of Acceptance. No expenses have been allocated for development expenditure,” he said.

Yesterday, the New Straits Times reported a corporation that was registered as a cosmetics company covertly worked as a flood mitigation consultant, embezzling millions of ringgit from a government flood mitigation project worth RM16 billion.

Further accusations were also made against several law firms in Klang and Batang Kali, who are accused of helping to smooth the money transaction by allegedly ‘legalising’ the pay-outs through their agreements with the companies that were given the contracts for the flood mitigation projects.

According to Chegubard, the issue blew up last year when former environment and water minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man was accused of awarding a company an RM7 billion flood mitigation project.

The PAS vice-president, however, denied approving funds for the project.
