Family costumes in the Kaling household? Forget about it!

Though Mindy Kaling and her kids love Halloween, getting them to dress up in a coordinated costume is not in the cards anytime soon, the 45-year-old actress said.

While chatting to PEOPLE at ChainFEST on Saturday, Oct. 5, the mom of three explained that she has “too many disparate personalities in my house to do a family costume — although I would love that.”

“I tried to have them go as the Super Mario brothers,” she revealed at the Los Angeles food festival before adding, "That's not happening this year.”

The Never Have I Ever creator also shared that to get into the spooky-season spirit, her go-to horror movie is Rosemary's Baby — but it’s a bit too mature for a family watch.

“Classic,” she said of the 1968 film. “Not good for kids. For kids, Hotel Transylvania.”

This Halloween will be Kaling’s first as a mom of three, as she quietly welcomed her third child, daughter Anne, in February 2024. For her other two children — daughter Katherine "Kit" Swati, 6, and son Spencer Avu, 4 — it won’t be their first rodeo.

Last year, the family celebrated the holiday by trick-or-treating — in non-coordinated costumes, of course — and Kaling documented the entire thing on Instagram.

For Halloween 2023, Kit dressed up in a green gown as Princess Tiana from Disney's The Princess and the Frog, while Spencer opted to go as a firetruck, carrying a miniature version of the vehicle with shoulder straps.

Kaling, meanwhile, donned a Cookie Monster mask and blue top for the trio’s outing.

Since their births, Kaling has kept her kids’ faces out of the spotlight. She has also never revealed the identity of the father of her children.

Speaking about this decision to protect their privacy, she previously told PEOPLE, “I feel like I might as well wait until they get old enough so they can tell me if they want to be part of my social media or not.”

But, she added, "I'm like any parent where I'm proud of the things they do. I think they're so cute, and of course, I want other people to see it."

Reflecting on becoming a mother in 2021, the actress told PEOPLE that "it absolutely takes a village" to raise her kids.

"I wouldn't be able to keep my full-time professional career and have two children under the age of 3 without the incredibly strong relationship I have with my nanny," she said. "Also with my dad [Avu], who comes over to the house at least twice a day to take my son out for walks and to pick up my daughter and bring her home.”

Added Kaling: “My village is small, and I wish it was bigger."
