Milwaukee Father Describes 'Goodhearted' Son as Officer Charged With Homicide Appears in Court

The family of a man who died days after what prosecutors say was a fight with an off-duty police officer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is now being represented by attorney Benjamin Crump, who is also representing the family of George Floyd.

Jose Acevedo, father of 25-year-old Joel, described his “goodhearted” animal-loving son in a video by the Voces de la Frontera immigrant campaign group, released as Michael Mattioli, a Milwaukee police officer, appeared in court on a charge of first degree reckless homicide.

Mattioli, 32, faces the charge after allegedly putting Acevedo in a chokehold while off duty at a party in April.

Acevedo’s family are calling for the release of 911 tapes and bodycam footage, the Journal Sentinel said.

“He was like a magnet, touched people’s lives,” Jose Acevedo says of his son in footage here, recorded at the Milwaukee County Courthouse on June 24. “He would go out of his way to take food to the homeless out of his own car,” Acevedo says. “He would give the shirt off his back. It’s just not the same without him.” Credit: Voces de la Frontera via Storyful
