Every year, the design community flocks to Milan's Salone del Mobile furniture fair to discover the latest trends and offerings from leading brands. However, this year's event, which was slated for April 21 to 26, has been postponed until June 16 to 21 due to the coronavirus outbreak in Italy.

The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, took to social media to share the announcement, stating that the public health emergency led organizers to reschedule the popular international design fair. "I am calling on our colleagues in the furnishing sector and the Salone del Mobile to pull together to make sure Milan doesn’t grind to a halt," Sala said. "We need to work objectively to stop this virus spreading, but we must also take care not to spread the virus of distrust."

The mayor also raised concerns about the economic impact that the spread of the coronavirus will have, as attendees might be faced with exorbitant hotel rates in June.

The coronavirus outbreak has lead to the cancellation of many trade shows and conferences around the world. The Mobile World Congress, Facebook's Global Marketing Summit, and the MIDO eyewear fair are just a few other events that have been postponed.

According to CNN, more than 2,700 people worldwide have died from the coronavirus, which originated in mainland China. More than 80,000 cases have been reported globally. Over 280 people have been infected in Italy, while Iran has 95 cases and South Korea has over 970 cases.
