Mila Jirin pleads the Malaysian government to restrict Chinese tourists

5 Jan – Mila Jirin is expressing hope for the Malaysian government to reconsider citizens' plea to temporarily restrict tourists from China.

The former singer turned businesswoman, who owns several businesses including a catering company, stated that the government should take into account various implications to the country's economy should Malaysia undergo another movement control order if COVID-19 cases rise again.

Sharing an article on Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA)'s statement regarding Chinese tourists bringing in RM3.6 billion in profits, Mila stated that the tourism industry should not be selfish and should consider the safety of Malaysian people instead.

"Will you consider how much local businesses would suffer instead? We just want it to be restricted temporarily. Foreign media has reported that a third wave spike is expected after March," she wrote.

She also tagged Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa as well as Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the said post, expressing hope that the people's plea would be heard.

Earlier, the Director General of Health, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah confirmed that there are two main COVID-19 variants, namely the BA.5.2 variant and the BF.7 variant that have been detected in Malaysia.
