Mike Johnson addresses congress for first time as House speaker
Rep Mike Johnson (R-LA) addressed the House of Representatives for the first time as Speaker of the House.
After 22 days without a speaker, following the ousting of Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Mr Johnson was elected into the position. He received 220 votes in a chamber with 433 out of 435 seats currently filled.
In his address, Mr Johnson extended his thanks to several people, including Hakeem Jeffries, Kevin McCarthy, staff, and his family. He cracked several jokes, making representatives on both sides of the aisle laugh, and he shared a heartfelt anecdote about his first year in congress.
