Jana Kramer and her ex-husband Mike Caussin feel very proud of and secure with where their relationship is today.

The country music star, 39, invited her NFL star ex, 36, on her iHeart Media podcast Whine Down with Jana Kramer for a three-part interview series as she releases her memoir, The Next Chapter, about the dissolution of their marriage. In the first episode of the series released on Tuesday, the singer/actress and the football player open up about how there’s enough trust in their co-parenting partnership today that he didn’t feel the need to read her book.

Caussin explained on Whine Down that, although he was “skeptical” when Kramer told him that she was working on the book last fall, because “things have evolved so much” in their relationship in the past year, he trusts her intentions. He said, “Jana asked me now that it’s published, ‘Before it comes out, do you want to read it?’ and I told her, ‘No,’ because I trust our relationship more now than I ever have.”

“For me, I thought, ‘Why read it and rehash — in my own work and journey — rehash some of these things emotionally and internally and feel any time kind of way for Jana?’” he recalled.

“I believe Jana — what her point and her narrative is,” the former tight end said, even though he admits that there may be anecdotes in the book that “bother” him.

“I know where her heart is and anything in there I know doesn’t necessarily directly have to do with me anymore. It’s just her story,” he continued. “I support her, I’m proud of her, I’m happy for her, but whatever it says in regards to our marriage, it is what it is.”

After the two spoke about how the book would have looked different and Caussin would have responded differently if it was written two years ago, Kramer agreed that they’re in a positive place nowadays. “We have a new relationship. Our marriage died, but we have a new relationship. This is a better relationship.”

The former One Tree Hill star and football player were divorced in April 2021 after six years of marriage. The two share two children together — daughter Jolie, 7½, and son Jace, 4 — and Kramer is currently expecting a third baby — a boy! — with fiancé Allan Russell.

The “Let It Burn” singer’s memoir The Next Chapter (published by HarperOne, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers) is out now and explores how she’s found peace since the divorce, as well as her new outlook on her failed relationships.

The country star spoke to PEOPLE about her process writing the book and how she hopes to inspire others.

She said, "The book started off very much like blame game and more of a victim place. That's where I was at post-divorce, and realizing that at the end of the day, blaming other people for where you're at is going to get you nowhere, to be able to look and go, 'OK, why am I here and what choices?'"

"That's something where I'm proud of how I've been able to change the narrative to go, 'Now I don't want to, even today, I don't want to give up, and I don't want to place blame,'” she continued. “I want to learn, do better, and fix the pieces of me that makes me feel like, why would I stay in this relationship when it's not serving me, and it's very unhealthy.”
