KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 — Golden Globe Best Actress winner Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh has put to rest questions over her nationality.

This follows Hong Kong Culture, Sports and Tourism secretary Kevin Yeung claiming Yeoh to be ‘a Hong Kong actor’ in a congratulatory statement over her win for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

In a post on her social media, the 60-year-old started by thanking the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, and Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, who congratulated the Ipoh-born icon on her win.

Yeoh went on to thank leaders of the country besides her extended family in Hong Kong and China.

“Thkq thkq to the outpouring of love and congratulations from family friends around the world... my King and Queen and PM and leaders of Malaysia, my extended family in HK in China ... my deepest gratitude...,” she wrote, pointing out that her journey as an actor began in Hong Kong.

Yeung’s statement had led to much criticism on social media.

Meanwhile, Yeoh has also been nominated for Best Actress for the upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards to be held on February 26.

Nominations from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) are seen as an important stepping stone in the race to the Oscars, which will take place on March 12.
