The BBC have announced they are cancelling military drama Our Girl and will not be going ahead with a fifth series, following Michelle Keegan's exit from the show.

The military drama began in 2013 starring Lacey Turner (Eastenders) as a working woman named Molly Dawes as she joins the British army. In 2016 Michelle Keegan took over as lead, starring as the more experienced soldier, Lance Corporal Georgie Lane.

Earlier this year Keegan left the show, with her final series (series 4) airing in March 2020. Despite conversations with I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here winner Jacqueline Jossa to replace Keegan as the lead role in series 5, BBC bosses this week announced they would cancelling the show.

Our Girl creator and writer Tony Grounds told Radio Times: "With the finale of series four showing Georgie ready to move on with her life, it feels like the right time for us to do the same."

Earlier this year Keegan said her decision to leave the show was a "really really difficult decision," and one that "didn't come lightly".

Keegan continued, "I just felt like I wanted to explore other opportunities. I’ve been doing it for four years now and I absolutely love the show, I really do and I love playing the character. I’m so going to miss it."

Luckily creator Tony Grounds didn't rule out future projects, adding, "Michelle and I are keen to continue our working relationship and, who knows, maybe we’ll catch up with Georgie in the future. I wanted to say a big thank you to the fans of the show, it’s been a joy to write."
