Michelle Heaton has revealed she used to buy vodka instead of doing the school run during her battle with alcoholism.
The Liberty X star battled substance abuse problems for years but is now sober after a stint in rehab in 2021.
The mum-of-two told The Sun: “I would always promise myself this was the last time I was going to drink or use cocaine. But I’d wake up with the fear of it not being there and have to buy more vodka.
“I’d manipulate friends into picking up the kids from school. I was selfish. I was exhausted. I didn’t want to lie, but I had to because I needed alcohol.”
The star, 42, added that it was “relentless”.
Last year, her husband Hugh Hanley said things got so bad that in September 2020, the singer was told she would die if she didn’t do something about it.
In April 2021 she checked into The Priory for almost a month and is now celebrating eight months of sobriety.
Earlier this week, Heaton shared side by side pictures on Instagram showing her now, and the day she entered rehab.
She told fans the first photo was taken when she was “scared” and “alone”, had “no hope” and when she was “grey and swollen from a failing liver and pancreas”.
She said in the second image she was “happy” and “filled with hope”.
“Not only am I grateful for achieving 8 months sobriety, but my body, mind and soul has been replenished with love,” she told her followers. “I had to learn to love myself to become well again!”
She went on: “I don’t have any resolutions this year, because all I need right now is my health, my sobriety, my friends back and a family that doesn’t have to worry about me anymore.”
