Michael Owen has lauded Bukayo Saka after the Englishman got on the scoresheet to help Arsenal beat Everton 4-0 at the Emirates on Wednesday night.

The Gunners lost 1-0 to Everton when the sides met at Goodison Park last month but the league leaders got their revenge at the Emirates.

Saka broke the deadlock in the 40th minute. Oleksandr Zinchenko found him with a through ball and the winger smashed the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Idrissa Gueye was caught in possession in his own half before the interval and Gabriel Martinelli capitalised on the mistake to make it 2-0.

Martin Odegaard and Martinelli added two more goals after the break as Arsenal ran out 4-0 winners to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Saka has been one of Arsenal’s star performers this season. He now has ten goals and nine assists in 25 Premier League appearances.

Owen thinks Saka’s goal was “absolutely brilliant” as he “loved the way he turned” before finding the net.

“It was a real bit of quality that broke the deadlock,” Owen said on Premier League Productions. “It was everything we associate with Arsenal really.

“They were proving and trying and then, eventually, a little gap opened and they exploited it. It was a brilliant finish from Saka, absolutely brilliant.

“The problem defenders have with him is he can go one or two ways, can’t he? If you watch the shape of his body. He gets himself between his body and the danger man, it’s really good forward play, to protect the ball like that.

“At the last minute, he decides to take it on his right, then nobody could get near him. What a finish it was.”

Owen added: “He was always asking for the ball. He’s wanting it throughout.

“I love the way he turns for the opening goal. He uses his body to get between the ball and man, then the finish is exquisite with his right foot.”

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta added after the game that his team “grew” after Saka opened the scoring.

“I’m really happy as it was the game we had in hand, against an opponent we knew was going to make life really difficult. We experienced that at Goodison,” Arteta said.

“They are so willing to learn and they’re asking for more and more every day. When you have that, and you have the talent and the ideas that they have, good things will happen.

“We started with some frustration, not really understanding what we had to do. The timing of the two goals was key and we needed a magic moment there. Then I think the team grew.”
