Meteor Shoots Across Sky Above Southwest Puerto Rico

A meteor shot across the sky above Cabo Rojo, a municipality on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico, during the early hours of Wednesday, January 4.

Footage captured by Frankie Lucena shows the meteor lighting up the sky. Lucena said the meteor appeared above the Carina constellation. “It is rare for them to travel this far south,” Lucena told Storyful.

According to NASA, the Quadrantids, considered to be one of the best annual meteor showers, peaked between January 2-3 and were most visible in the Northern Hemisphere.

Unlike most meteor showers which originate from comets, the Quadrantids originate from asteroid 2003 EH1, NASA said. Credit: Frankie Lucena via Storyful
