The 2024 Met Gala theme has been announced!

On Wednesday, Vogue revealed new details behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art's hotly anticipated fashion gala, held annually on the first Monday in May and attended by the biggest stars across all entertainment industries.

Titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” the upcoming Costume Institute exhibit will feature approximately 250 items — including 50 significant pieces such as an 1877 Charles Frederick Worth silk satin ball gown — that span over 400 years of history.

The walk-through will also feature everything from a 17th century English Elizabethan-era bodice to 21st century works by modern-day fashion industry tastemakers including Phillip Lim, Stella McCartney, and Connor Ives. Additionally, it will house designs by legendary names in fashion including Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and Hubert de Givenchy.

Many of the pieces will be exhibited along with contemporary sartorial works and all will compartmentalized into a core exhibit and three additional zones — Land, Sea and Sky — which, according to Andrew Bolton, curator in charge, “is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion.”

Everything will be brought to life in a innovative way through the use of technology — from video animation, light projection and AI to Pepper's ghost, an illusion technique — to create an immersive sensorial experience.

Nick Knight, founder of SHOWstudio, will serve as creative consultant on the visual presentation while Sissel Tolaas, who has worked with Balenciaga, will develop scents for the installations.

“This innovative show will push the boundaries of our imagination and invite us to experience many facets of a work, to learn more about its history, and, ultimately, to gain a deeper appreciation of its beauty,"Max Hollein, the Met’s CEO, notes to Vogue.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted annual events celebrating its Costume Institute during the 1950s and 1960s, but the gala as we know it didn't take form until Diana Vreeland joined the committee. The former Vogue editor-in-chief was the one who introduced the concept of themes for each gala, starting with a celebration of Cristóbal Balenciaga's fashion in 1973 just one year after his death.

In the decades since, the Institute has honored a diverse range of eras, influences and icons in fashion including its most recent Karl Lagerfeld.

Last year, A-listers showed up to the affair dressed in tweed, pearls and even cat costumes as an ode to Lagerfeld's beloved pet Choupette to pay homage to the late designer who worked for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel and his own eponymous label.

Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz and Roger Federer were in charge of co-chairing the event with Vogue editor-in-chief  Anna Wintour, who has been a co-chair since 1995.

The "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" show will run from May 10–September 2, 2024 following the Met Gala red carpet on May 6.
