Martin Short and Meryl Streep's onscreen love story is just getting started.

On May 29, the actors were photographed filming a scene together for Only Murders in the Building season 4 outside an apartment building in New York City's Upper West Side that acts as the Arconia, where Short's character, Oliver Putnam, and his crime-solving partners, Charles (Steve Martin) and Mabel (Selena Gomez), live in the Hulu series.

For the scene, Short, 74, was seen with his arms around Streep's waist as he smiled at her. Streep, 74, rested her hands against his chest and smiled back. The costars — whose characters are due to embark on a romance in the forthcoming season after dropping hints in season 3 — leaned their foreheads close together while they filmed, making the scene look all the more intimate.

Streep stars on the show as Broadway actress Loretta Durkin, who developed a romance with Short's character while they worked together on his play, but at the end of season 3, she received an offer to work in Los Angeles, leaving her and Oliver's future unknown.

The May 29 sighting of the actors filming together means fans will at least get a few shared moments between the characters in the upcoming season, which is set to premiere August 27.

While the actors have been the subject of much speculation since Streep joined Only Murders last year — and have spoken out in contradiction to reports of a real-life romance — Short told PEOPLE earlier this month that the Mamma Mia! star joining the series as his romantic interest was purely by chance.

"They already planned that I would have a theatrical experience and there would be a love interest," the actor said. "So that was coincidental, but [Streep] just wanted to be on the show. She didn't know about [the love story]."

He added of how she came to be on the series, "The story with Meryl is she phoned me and said, 'I want to be on it.'"

As for the interest in their off-screen dynamic, Short said, "It's always interesting. Show business relationships and spec."

"She's fabulous," he added of his longtime friend. "There's no one who doesn't adore her."

Season 4 of Only Murders sees Short, Martin and Gomez trade coasts as they head to L.A. to investigate the murder of Charles' stunt double, Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), which happened at the end of season 3, and wind up pondering the future of their murder podcast, as they receive Hollywood offers to take it to the big screen.

Along with Streep and the leading trio, season 4 sees several newcomers join, including Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, Molly Shannon and Kumail Nanjiani, who Short told PEOPLE is "fabulous."

Speaking to the all-star slate of actors they have join their ranks every season, the actor said, "The writing is so good, and the directing, and the execution of the show is so good that it makes people say, 'Oh, I want to be on it.'"

"It's a very, very, very loose, fun-filled set," Short continued. "I think everyone has the same review – that, working on the show, it's really fun and loose, and that's kind of the philosophy of Steve, the way he's always worked, and so is Selena. So everyone works in joy and happiness, because we're lucky people."
