Merkel struggles to put on doctoral robe

Merkel admitted she was a regular student of the COVID-19 data that Johns Hopkins was publishing and cautioned the international community that the pandemic was not over.

"The pandemic and what it demands from all of us every day is gruelling and we want our normality back," Merkel said during remarks at the ceremony. "But we must not let up, especially now, in taking the daily figures, data, facts on the development of the pandemic as seriously as we did on the first day," she continued.

Merkel's visit to the United States is overshadowed by a natural disaster unfolding in Germany, with at least 42 dead and dozens missing on Thursday as floodwaters inundate parts of the country.
