Meloni: We must not give up on Ukraine
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni discussed Ukraine’s immediate needs ahead of winter as Russia attacks critical infrastructure including energy supply lines.
In a statement, Meloni stressed the importance of continued support for Ukraine, and that she believes this is in Italy’s national interest - "not only to protect the rule of law but also in protest of the ability of a country which is stronger militarily to invade its neighbour."
The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the Ambrosetti economic forum in Cernobbio, Lake Como
In a statement, "We must not give up on Ukraine" Meloni reiterated and added, "I say that knowing clearly there is a public opinion that is frightened, worried - legitimately, rightly - about war."
Particular attention was paid to the topic of reconstruction, in view of the next Ukraine Recovery Conference planned in Italy in 2025, the statement said.
In the meeting, Zelenskyy asked for more weapons from his Western ally – the same request he made to the German chancellor Olaf Scholz last week.
Meloni stressed how support of Ukraine was central to Italy’s G7 presidency and her commitment to a lasting peace.
