Meghan Markle's Butterfly Earrings Paid Homage to Princess Diana
What's a royal tour without a sweet tribute?
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's second day in Colombia has already been an eventful one—literally. The two attended the Responsible Digital Future summit in Bogotá, where they addressed making the internet a safer place for everyone, and then stopped by a kindergarten in Santa Fe to take in local culture and meet students. With a packed schedule like that, Markle has been turning out look after look, one of which included a sweet homage to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.
While she opted for a preppy look to visit Colegio La Giralda, she added a touch of whimsy via a pair of gold butterfly-shaped earrings. Royal fans may recognize them, as People confirmed that the earrings belonged to the late princess. She wore them on a royal tour of Canada in 1986 with a matching butterfly choker.
During that royal tour, Diana and then-Prince Charles met with local officials ahead of Expo '86, a World's Fair held in Vancouver, British Columbia. Markle and Harry were in Vancouver earlier this year prepping for the Invictus Games, which will return to Canada in February 2025.
Markle previously wore the earrings in Australia back in October 2018. The tour marked her first public appearance after announcing her pregnancy. She wore them again when she launched a capsule collection with Smart Works in September 2019, one of her previous patronages.
Markle also has Diana's aquamarine ring and diamond tennis bracelet, both gifted to her by Harry. During the couple's tour of Nigeria, Markle debuted a diamond cross necklace, which also previously belonged to Diana.
Today's school visit itself also was a nod to Diana. The late princess was a kindergarten teacher before she got married to now-King Charles in 1981. Much of her work as a royal revolved around children and young people, a focus that both Markle and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, carry on in Diana's spirit.
