The Duchess of Sussex has posted pictures of a visit to British animal welfare charity Mayhew as she and Harry brace for a second difficult day in their new Canadian life.

On the couple’s official Instagram account SussexRoyal, Meghan is pictured stroking one of the dogs at the charity, at which she is a patron.

“Earlier this month, The Duchess of Sussex popped in to see the amazing people at Mayhew to hear about the incredible progress made throughout the festive period,” the caption reads.

It continues: “From cats and dogs who have found new homes to animal welfare cases handled in the community - @TheMayhew believes in the power of togetherness and the special bond between humans and animals.”

It is not clear when the visit took place, but Meghan was in the UK with Harry in the second week of January when they carried out a number of engagements following their Christmas break in Canada.

Meghan, an advocate of adopting rescue dogs, chose Mayhew, based in Kensal Green, north-west London, as one of her first patronages.

She previously visited the shelter in January 2019, and was introduced to Maggie, a one-year-old Jack Russell who was up for adoption on the charity’s website.

The duchess picked up Maggie when she saw her shivering, and clutched her to her chest as she chatted to Mayhew staff, who told her about the charity’s projects in India and Afghanistan.

Mayhew was founded in 1886 and today sees itself as an animal welfare social worker, keeping cats and dogs, whether family pets or companions for the homeless, safe and well alongside their owners, and supporting communities.

It has a pet refuge service, provides vet services for vulnerable owners, and has a team of animal welfare officers who work with local residents helping local communities.

The pictures come as the couple have spent the hours since Harry landed in Vancouver Island dogged by perceived paparazzi intrusions and fresh questions surrounding their security costs.

The Sussexes have issued a legal warning to the media after various outlets published paparazzi shots of Meghan walking her dogs with baby Archie.

The images of the duchess emerged on Monday morning and showed her walking her two pets with her son in a baby sling in a park in Vancouver.

But the pictures were reportedly taken by photographers hiding in bushes with long-lens cameras.

After the images surfaced, the couple’s legal team at Schillings sent a legal notice to the UK press, TV and photo agencies warning against using them.

Prince Harry rejoined his wife in Canada on Monday evening after hashing out the new arrangement for the two of them with other senior members of the royal family.

He had not seen his wife or his young son for 10 days during the talks.

Meanwhile, Meghan's estranged father, Thomas, said he does not believe he will see his daughter ever again.

“The last time they might see me is being lowered into the ground," Mr Markle said in a Channel 5 documentary, which airs tonight.

Harry has repeatedly compared the treatment of his wife at the hands of the press to that of his mother who was killed in a car crash in Paris while being chased by the paparazzi in 1997.

Following the talks to renegotiate the Sussexes’ relationship with the royal family, the Queen said she was “pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family”.
