Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Trip to Colombia Ruffled Some Feathers Back Home
Royal experts questioned the motives behind their "quasi-royal tour."
While it was all smiles, sweet kisses, and salsa dances for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry during their recent trip to Colombia, some royal onlookers weren't happy with the couple. Their international visit specifically ruffled the feathers of royal expert and author Robert Jobson, who had some choice words for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's "quasi-royal tour."
"It wasn't just fast and loose with the truth, a lot of it was complete baloney," Jobson told the The Sun. "They tried to give it an impression of a quasi-royal tour. They had elements of politics and elements of caring for young kids."
"At the end of the day, what I don't understand is, if Meghan and Harry wanted to do 'quasi-royal tours,' why not stick around and do it properly?" he said, calling into question the Sussex's motives behind the trip.
Jobson argued that Meghan and Harry should have stayed senior royal family members. Fans will know the couple stepped down as working royals in January 2020.
"Then, they would have been doing it for the king and the country, which is what Harry always bangs on about," Jobson continued.
Jobson went on to note their journey was inauthentic, saying, "Just do things that are real, rather than staged with loads of outfit changes...I think they could just do some real work in America, maybe, and people will start to believe you."
Meghan and Harry's trip saw them participate in activities aligned with their nonprofit, the Archewell Foundation, make school visits, host an Invictus Games training session, speak on a panel at the Afro Women and Power forum, and immerse themselves in Colombian culture. They were welcomed by Vice President Francia Márquez.
This isn't the first time Meghan and Harry's travels abroad have been met with criticism. King Charles was reportedly "angrier than anyone has ever seen him" over the couple's trip to Nigeria. The basis of his irritation was seemingly because the visit resembled an official royal tour.
