As a queer person in the year of the devil 2020, there isn't a lot that makes me smile. I don't need to go down the long list of things that have cemented my frown lines, because, truly, I like to think I'm an optimistic person. But come on, folks; no one can disagree that this past eight months has tested the faith of even the sunniest individual.

But here's some news that shot up my serotonin levels real fast the moment I saw it: Soccer star Megan Rapinoe is engaged to her girlfriend of about four years, WNBA star Sue Bird. Look at this perfect, gay (meaning both gay and happy in this context) photo that Bird posted:

Honestly, if it were anyone else but the very agile Megan Rapinoe up on the ledge of that pool, I would be slightly worried. But she's clearly got it all handled.

Bird, who is the guard for the Seattle Storm and Rapinoe, an Olympic gold medalist for the US Women's national soccer team, got to know each other during the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Clearly, fans were on the lookout for this engagement, because two days ago, when Bird posted a video of herself sanitizing her hands, her followers caught the ring on a certain finger. I mean, it's pretty obvious:

Once the couple confirmed the news, Bird's team posted this sweet message:

Together, they've been very vocal activists. In June, they hosted the 2020 ESPYS with NFL pro Russell Wilson and paid tribute to Black athletes, including Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson, Bill Russell and Serena Williams.

"Every athlete at every level has the power to show what it looks like to fight for what is right," Rapinoe said in this clip.

"Trust us, we know that sports are important. That's why we're gathered here tonight. But do Black lives matter to you when they're not throwing touchdowns, grabbing rebounds, serving aces? If that was uncomfortable to hear, good," Bird said.

Anyway, congrats to these two. Honor them by voting.
