Mechanisms for targeted subsidies will be explained in Parliament, says Anwar

CYBERJAYA, Oct 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said he will explain in Parliament the mechanisms for distributing targeted subsidies to the public.

Anwar, who is also finance minister, was responding to his predecessor Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who had yesterday asked for details on the mechanism.

“I think I'd better use Parliament to give an explanation on that,” he told reporters at Multimedia University here when asked for comment on Ismail Sabri’s query.

But Anwar did not say when he would explain in Parliament.

Bera MP Ismail Sabri had said the government needs to come out with details of how it plans to carry out the targeted subsidies so that no one is left out or burdened by rising living costs.

While debating the Supply Bill 2024 in Parliament, the Umno backbencher said it is important to refine the mechanism because subsidies have become “stuck” in the economy as a structural component.
