Meagan Good and Costar Cory Hardrict Bonded Over Their Real-Life Divorces: 'We Cried Together' (Exclusive)

Meagan Good and costar Cory Hardrict star in Tyler Perry's 'Divorce in the Black,' on Prime Video now

Meagan Good connected with costar Cory Hardrict over their separate divorce experiences.

The two star in Tyler Perry's new drama Divorce in the Black, and in an interview with PEOPLE in this week's issue, Good explains how they bonded via their real-life divorces off screen.

"I want to be respectful to whatever it is Cory would or wouldn't share. What I will say is in that moment when he was getting a divorce, I talked to him and I said to him, 'I know it's really, really hard and it's one of the most painful things you'll ever experience.' "

"They say in clinical studies divorce is the second most traumatic thing, pain-wise, outside of death because a divorce is like a death," she continues. "So I knew exactly where he was. I saw him that day and I just hugged him and I held him, and we cried together." Good says she told Hardrict, "My heart hurts for you."

Good finalized her divorce from DeVon Franklin in June 2022 after nine years of marriage. Hardrict finalized his divorce from actress Tia Mowry in April 2023. Hardrict and Mowry, who announced their split after 14 years of marriage in October 2022, share son Cree, 13, and daughter Cairo, 6.

Recalls Good of her encouragement to Hardrict, "At that point I was already a year down the line and I was like: 'Look, I'm still working through it, but what I can tell you is it gets better. This is your second act of life, and it is going to be as you choose it. Even though you're hurt and you're going through it — and I'm sure Tia's hurt and she's going through it — ultimately you have to choose and say, 'This is where we are right now. This is what's happening, and I'm going to accept that this is my second act in life and I'm going to make it wonderful.' "

The actress, who is currently dating Creed III actor Jonathan Majors, had more advice as well.

"You can only control you, so this is where you are. What are you going to choose?" she says, adding, "It's a hard conversation to have with someone in that moment, but it makes all the difference in the world, because when you are able to process it, it does set you on your journey."

In Divorce in the Black, Good plays Ava, who, per a synopsis, is "devastated when her husband Dallas (Hardrict) abandons a marriage she is determined to fight for until fate intervenes, revealing Dallas’ wicked deeds that have trashed their marriage, and once upon a time sabotaged Ava’s destiny to be loved by her true soulmate."

Good says she and Hardrict talked about their divorce journeys "a lot during filming."

"It was cathartic for both of us in different ways," she says. "Mine a little bit more on the nose, but his in a different way. As actors, the wonderful thing is that we have an opportunity to just share our souls and ... you're able to express it in this emotion."
