KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 — The public is reminded to desist from uploading or sharing hateful content related to race, religion and the royal institution (3Rs) on social media as well as text messaging applications.

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din said doing so risks jeopardising public order and harmony in the country.

“Hate speech refers to words or pictures that demean the value of an individual on account of their race, ethnicity, religion or nationality.

“With that, the MCMC will continue to monitor and curb the spread of false information and malicious statements involving the 3Rs,” Mohamad Salim said in a statement today.

Mohamad Salim said that sharing fake, malicious and threatening content is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (AKM) 1998.

Under the Act, those convicted can face a maximum fine of RM50,000, or imprisonment of up to a year, or both.

He said joint enforcement action with the police will be taken against those suspected of disseminating such content to protect the interests of society at large.

Mohamad Salim also urged the administrators of online news portals, social media sites and messaging applications to use their editorial discretion when managing comments on their respective platforms.

“Social media platform providers are requested to be responsible and take down provocative and threatening content when discovered,” he said.

Content with elements of incitement, provocation or slurs targeting the 3Rs should be reported to MCMC immediately, Mohamad Salim added.

Complaints can be channelled through the portal https://aduan.skmm.gov.my/, hotline: 1800-188-030, WhatsApp 016-2206 262 and email aduanskmm@mcmc.gov.my.
