KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — The Kelantan state assembly will be dissolved on June 22 to pave the way for the state elections, Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob announced today.

In a statement, he said he had sought an audience with the state ruler of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, for the dissolution of the 14th state assembly earlier.

"In accordance with Clause 2, Article 46 of the State Constitution, His Royal Highness has given his consent for the state assembly to be dissolved on Thursday, June 22," he said.

There are 45 seats in the Kelantan state assembly. 37 of those seats are held by PAS, while one seat is held by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia. Another seven seats are held by Barisan Nasional's Umno.

PAS has led the state since 1990, although as a member of different federal coalitions. The Islamist party is most recently a member of Perikatan Nasional, along with Bersatu,

Apart from Kelantan, the Pakatan Harapan-held Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan, as well as the PAS-led Kedah and Terengganu also decided not to hold their state elections at the same time as the 15th general election in November last year.

Penang already announced that its state assembly will dissolve on June 28, while Negeri Sembilan is expected to do so on June 30.

The full term for the state legislative assembly in all these states will come to an end this year, meaning all six must hold their elections this year.
