Maya Hawke Would Have Liked to “Parent Trap” Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman When They Divorced
"I remember so many hard days and fights about packing your bag," Maya Hawke said of splitting time between her parents' homes growing up
Maya Hawke is reflecting on her famous parents' divorce and how it affected her.
Maya, 25, recently appeared on The New York Times' Modern Love podcast, where she read a piece written by author Jordana Jacobs titled "Our Kinder, Gentler, Nobody-Moves-Out Divorce" and then spoke to her family situation: her parents Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman divorced in 2005.
After being asked whether a "dream situation" following her parents' split would have involved her family continuing to live in one home, the Stranger Things star said, "I think the dream situation is captured by the film Parent Trap."
Lindsay Lohan's iconic 1998 family comedy (a remake of the 1961 film starring Hayley Mills) centers on twin girls separated at birth following their parents' divorce who meet and conspire to convince their parents to get back together.
"Yeah, secret twin, get your parents back together. But I think this would have been a pretty good secondary dream," Maya said during the podcast. "I mean, I remember so many hard days and fights about packing your bag... you forgot this medicine, and you have to go back and get it... and Sunday goodbyes. And then the whole day is gone because it’s all a transition day, where everyone is in strife."

The actress and singer recalled an early exchange she had with her father Ethan, 53, when she wanted to go to a party instead of spending an allotted weekend with him.
" 'This is our special time. This is our one weekend,' " she recalled her dad saying. "And I was like, every weekend can’t be special. They’re all my weekends. And you get every other one, and my mom gets every other one. And I know that that’s hard. But that makes it so that every one of my weekends is special family time. I need to build my friendships."
