Matty Healy's Mom Denise Welch Jokes She 'Wasn't Aware' Taylor Swift Had a New Album Out: 'I Wish Her All the Best'
Matty Healy is thought to be the inspiration for much of Taylor Swift's new album 'The Tortured Poets Department'
More than 1 billion people streamed Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department upon its release last week — but Matty Healy’s mom was not one of them.
Denise Welch revealed on her British talk show Loose Women that she was not in the loop when it came to Swift’s latest album, but that she wished her son’s ex well.
“I wasn’t aware she had an album out at all,” Welch joked on Thursday, April 25 amid prodding from her co-panelists. “I haven’t heard anything about it.”
Welch, 65, then laughed an awkward laugh and said, “Anyway, I wish her all the best.”
The actress and TV personality’s response comes one day after Healy, 35, was approached by paparazzi in Los Angeles and was asked how he’d “rate” his “Taylor diss track” as compared to others.

“My diss track? Oh!” a confused Healy replied before laughing. “I haven’t really listened to that much of it, but I’m sure it’s good.”
Swift, 34, released The Tortured Poets Department on April 19, and though The 1975 frontman is not mentioned by name, many of the songs appear to be written about their brief romance last spring.
Swift has previously met Welch at least once before, as Welch shared a photo to Instagram in January 2023 with the star on the same night that Swift made a surprise appearance at The 1975 concert in London’s O2 arena. That night, she performed “Anti-Hero” live for the first time, and also covered The 1975’s 2013 single “The City.”
She and Healy stepped out publicly with their romance in May 2023, though they were broken up by June. She is now dating NFL superstar Travis Kelce, while Healy is dating model Gabbriette Bechtel.
The “About You” singer’s aunt Debbie Dedes previously told The Daily Mail that she didn’t think Healy would be bothered by the new music.
“She writes about all her relationships, doesn’t she? I don’t think it will come as a shock to him at all,” Dedes, who is Welch's sister, said. “He’s very happy in his new relationship so I’m sure he will be focusing on that.”
Though the lyrics of Swift’s songs remain up for interpretation, she included several overt references to Healy, like on the song “Guilty as Sin?,” in which she sings of someone sending her the 1989 synth-pop song “The Downtown Lights” by the band The Blue Nile.
Healy has previously called The Blue Nile his “favorite band of all time,” and has also said that “The Downtown Lights” was the inspiration for The 1975 song “Love It If We Made It.”
