Matt Gaetz’s GOP Buddies Are Preparing to Carry Out His Revenge Plan
Some Republicans in Congress are now passing around a resolution to enact the revenge plan that former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz outlined this week, according to a new report.
Gaetz, 42, told the Daily Beast Wednesday that he was “seriously considering” a brief return to Congress before officially resigning to file a privileged resolution that would publicize the names of current and former legislators who used public funds to pay sexual harassment settlements. However, it appears his colleagues may simply do it for him.
Some Republicans in Congress this week began circulating a draft of the resolution that would direct the House’s Administrative Committee to file a report with the names in question, Politico reported Thursday.
The move would mark a stunning parting blow to the chamber that long shunned Gaetz, a firebrand Florida conservative with deep ties to President-elect Donald Trump, over accusations he had sex with an underage girl, used illicit drugs, and paid for sex.
Gaetz has long denied any wrongdoing, and a years-long Justice Department probe into his alleged misconduct ended with prosecutors declining to press charges.
The conservative is now actively seeking retribution against his former colleagues after the House Ethics Committee secretly voted to release the results of an ethics investigation against him.
Gaetz resigned from the House of Representatives after Trump nominated him to serve as attorney general, but he quickly took himself out of the running for the job after a spate of unfavorable headlines softened his support—even among Republicans in the U.S. Senate.
Despite his exit from Congress, Gaetz managed to quickly land on his feet—announcing last week that he planned to launch a show on the right-wing channel One America News Network.
It remains unclear how much he will be paid for the primetime gig, or when the show is set to launch. A landing page for the program—titled The Matt Gaetz Show—on OAN’s website simply says it is “coming soon.”
