Matt Bomer and Nathan Lane to Star in Golden Girls-esque Hulu Pilot From Ryan Murphy and Will & Grace EPs

Matt Bomer and Nathan Lane will play a pal and a confidant in Hulu’s Mid-Century Modern.

The streamer has ordered a pilot for the potential multi-camera comedy, which hails from Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, and executive producer Ryan Murphy. Linda Lavin (Alice) also stars.

The series, which is loosely inspired by The Golden Girls, “follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age – who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother and a naked Gen Z housekeeper,” according to the official logline. “As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done.”

Lane (Only Murders in the Building) plays Bunny Schneiderman, “a successful businessman with one foot in retirement. Bunny is forever in search of love, but he first has to be convinced he’s worthy of it.”

Lavin, meanwhile, plays Bunny’s mother, Sybil. “Like her son, Sybil’s strengths are her weaknesses: wise, caring, and iconoclastic — which sometimes means she’s critical, smothering and amoral,” per the official character breakdown.

Last but not least is Bomer (White Collar, Fellow Travelers), who plays Jerry Frank. We’re told that Jerry “left the Mormon Church and his marriage in his early twenties after his wife informed him and the rest of the congregation that he was a homosexual. Now a latter-day saint in the literal sense of the term, Jerry is pure of heart. He is also hard of body and soft of head.”

Sitcom legend James Burrows will direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer, alongside Mutchnick, Kohan, Burrows, Lane, Bomer and Murphy.
