The Masked Singer is back for series 2 – and the first contestant has already been unmasked.

Hosted once again by Joel Dommett, six of this year's elaborately-costumed famous folk took to the stage for the Boxing Day premiere of the ITV show.

Meanwhile, judges Davina McCall, Rita Ora, Jonathan Ross and Masked Singer newcomer Mo Gilligan played detective, along with viewers at home.

"If Alice in Wonderland had a festival, this would be it, and I'm like Columbo!" Mo joked as the show kicked off.

Here's your last chance to look away, as we're about to talk through the results...

The six contestants went head to head in pairs – Robin vs Alien, Swan vs Dragon and Sausage vs Badger – with the audience voting for their favourites.

After the votes were cast, Alien, Swan and Badger ended up at risk of elimination. And the panel chose Alien to be unmasked…

Sophie Ellis-Bextor, welcome to The Masked Singer!

"You've crushed my mascot dreams!" she joked, adding that she didn't tell her kids she was going to be on the show.

"Hopefully it will be a nice surprise for them," she added.

"How successful were the judges with their guesses? After all, Joel did promise that the clue packages would be a lot harder this year.

Well, Mo thought that Alien was Lily Allen, while Davina's guess was Hannah Cooper (who's married to Masked Singer host Joel).

Rita suggested that Alien could be Sophie Dahl, while Jonathan believed the celebrity behind the mask was none other than Brenda Blethyn, star of ITV's Vera.

Sophie's clue package included crime scene tape (a reference to 'Murder on the Dance Floor') and a nod to the video for 'Get Over You' with a wedding dress on a mannequin.

And while we might have thought that her "epic battle" was a reference to that chart duel with Victoria Beckham back in the day, turns out it was actually a nod to her cameo in the final season of Game of Thrones.

Speaking about the clue package after the show, Sophie added: "I didn't have much input – it wasn't needed – and my favourite clue alluded to one of my songs being played in EastEnders while the Queen Vic burned down. I didn't even know!"

Sophie, who rose to fame as lead singer of theaudience prior to her solo career, said she "loved" her costume when she was shown the drawings and joked that it would be "fun" to wear it to parents' evening at school.

Prior to series 2's launch, Joel said: "I think last year they went a little easier [with the clues] as people were getting a sense of the show. I will say it's much harder when you're in the studio than when you're sat at home and you've got Google.

"This year there's certainly a couple of people that had everyone thrown off right until the end."

The next episode will see Blob, Harlequin, Bushbaby, Grandfather Clock, Seahorse and Viking take to the stage for their first performances.

The Masked Singer airs on Saturday nights on ITV.
