Masked Revelers Reenact Medieval 'Battle of the Oranges' in Northern Italy
Thousands flocked to the streets of Ivrea, Italy, for the northern city’s annual “Battle of the Oranges” on Sunday, February 19, where participants start the carnival season by pelting oranges at each other.
Footage by Alberto Vanzo shows revelers throwing oranges from a horse-drawn float in Ivrea’s Piazza Rondolino.
The tradition has its roots in the reenactment of a mythic 13th-century rebellion, according to the carnival’s official website. Credit: Alberto Vanzo via Storyful
