Maryland Gov Larry Hogan delivered remarks on Thursday, January 7, advising Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment following the chaos that broke out at the US Capitol on January 6.
In the press conference, Hogan described a phone call from House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, who Hogan said was “pleading” for security reinforcements as the Capitol was breached. Hogan said Hoyer’s request for National Guard troops was “repeatedly denied” by the Department of Defense.
Hogan said it took almost an hour and a half to get permission from the Department of Defense for appropriate National Guard deployments.
Hogan encouraged Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and assume the power of the presidential office for the remainder of President Trump’s term, committing to a “peaceful transfer of power.”
“There’s no question that America would be better off if the president would resign or be removed from office,” Hogan said. “I could never fathom a day like yesterday in America, but I will not stand for it, and neither should any American.”
