In addition to being an absolute icon, fashion star, and founder of one of the biggest lifestyle empires, Martha Stewart is also a mother to daughter Alexis Stewart, who she shares with ex-husband Andrew Stewart. Over the years, Martha has described their mother-daughter relationship as "difficult," though she told People in 2020 that the two would do "anything" for each other.

In the businesswoman's new Netflix documentary, aptly titled Martha, she opens up about becoming a mother, calling it unnatural. “Back then everybody was having babies so young. That was sort of like the style and the habit. I thought it was a natural thing and it turns out, it’s not at all natural to be a mother,” Martha said.

Even her friend Kathy Tatlock remembers Martha's difficult adjustment to parenthood. “She was happy when Lexi went down to nap so that she could be on her own,” Tatlock said. “She took care of Lexi, but she didn't dote on her. She was always a little bit chilly.”

Despite their differences, the mother-daughter duo have remained tight throughout the years. In 2011, Alexis said the pair are "incredibly close" even though they have the occasional argument. They recently purchased a $12.3 million duplex together on New York City's Upper West Side earlier this year. Alexis has even followed in her mother's footsteps in a sense. Alexis penned a tell-all book about her life and upbringing in 2011 titled Whateverland: Learning to Live Here, which she wrote alongside Jennifer Koppelman Hutt. And she didn't hold back about her childhood or Martha's parenting style, writing that she had "a very hands-off approach to child rearing."

She also alleged that growing up with Martha meant never feeling like you were enough. "Martha does everything better! You can't win," she scribed, per People. "If I didn't do something perfectly, I had to do it again. I grew up with a glue gun pointed at my head."

And a TV Host

In addition to being a writer, the famous kin also co-hosted a radio show called Whatever with Alexis and Jennifer alongside Hutt on SiriusXM's Martha Stewart Living Radio channel from 2005 to 2010. Alexis also followed in her mother's footsteps as a TV personality with a show called Whatever, Martha hosted by her and Hutt on the Fine Living Network. The aforementioned radio program also had a stint on TV on the Hallmark Channel.

Alexis has two kids, a daughter Jude and a son Truman, both of whom she welcomed via gestational surrogate. She's been publicly open about her fertility struggles, and revealed in 2007 that she had been undergoing IVF procedures and taking other medications during an interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She experienced three failed embryo transfers before welcoming Jude in 2011.

"Getting Jude was lucky," she told People at the time. "I'm happy, but this has been rough." A year later, Alexis welcomed Truman.

She previously shared that Martha had been "very supportive" throughout her journey and had "desperately" wanted to be a grandmother. And it seems the mogul has stepped into the role quite nicely. Last year, Martha threw a spa day-themed party for Jude's 12th birthday, and earlier this year, she treated her grandson to courtside seats at a New York Knicks game.

She was previously married to a lawyer.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Alexis wed John Cuti in a small 1997 wedding, though the pair separated in 2003. Before they finalized their divorce, Cuti represented Martha when she was on trial for insider trading, per People. Martha, however, was ultimately sentenced to five months in prison, five months of home confinement, and two years of supervised probation.

Alexis fainted during Martha's trial.

The Netflix documentary Martha revealed that Alexis had a visceral reaction to her mother's sentencing back in 2003. When she learned her mother would be serving time in jail, the TV host fainted. She remembered the moment saying, "and then I woke up and I was, unfortunately, still there."
