Marking Aidilfitri, works minister orders immediate stop to all highway road works from today till May 7

GOMBAK, April 18 — Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi today announced that all roadworks on highways nationwide are to stop with immediate effect until May 7.

He said this is to ensure a smooth drive for travellers using the highways for Hari Raya Aidilfitri which is expected to fall on either this Friday or this Saturday.

“I have ordered that immediately, from today, April 18, with the approval of concessionaires, that no roadworks will be conducted from April 18 to May 7,” he told reporters at the Gombak Toll Plaza this afternoon.

The ministry also welcomed the unity government’s initiative to implement the four-day Free Rahmah Toll initiative across 33 highways for all vehicle classes.

The 33 highways involved are: North-South Expressway, North–South Expressway Central Link North–South Expressway Central Link (Elite), Seremban-Port Dickson Highway, Second Link Bridge, Butterworth Outer Ring Road, Butterworth-Kulim Expressway, Penang Bridge, Penang Second Bridge, East Coast Expressway Phase 2, Karak Expressway, East Coast Expressway Phase 1, Sungai Besi Expressway, New Pantai Expressway, Kajang-Seremban Highway, Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway, Kemuning-Shah Alam Highway, Guthrie Corridor Expressway, Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway (Silk), Shah Alam Expressway, Sprint Expressway, Damansara-Puchong Expressway, Smart Tunnel, Cheras-Kajang Expressway, New North Klang Straits Bypass, Maju Expressway, Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway, Senai–Desaru Expressway, South Klang Valley Expressway, Kuala Lumpur-Kuala Selangor Expressway, West Coast Expressway, Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway, Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway, and Damansara-Shah Alam Elevated Expressway.

“Before this, it has always been two days every festive season. This is the first time,” he said, referring to the government’s decision to waive toll payments for four days.

Nanta added that the cost of the toll exemptions will be borne by the government and concession companies.

He did not mention the amount that will be borne.
