Mark Hamill Finally Meets Star Wars ‘Mother’ Natalie Portman — See Photo

Not long ago in our very own galaxy, Star Wars fans were blessed with a family reunion they never thought they’d get to see.

Franchise star Mark Hamill on Monday shared a picture of himself meeting Natalie Portman, who famously portrayed the younger version of Padmé Amidala — the mother of Hamill’s Luke and Carrie Fisher’s Leia — in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

This long-overdue meeting of mother and son went down Sunday at the 2024 Golden Globes, where Hamill was on hand to present the first-ever Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement Award to the cast and crew of Barbie.

Portman, meanwhile, was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for her work in the Netflix film May December; the award went to Poor Things‘ Emma Stone.

Hamill has played Luke in six separate films, beginning with 1977’s Star Wars and ending with 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. He most recently reprised his iconic role for the Season 2 finale of Disney+’s The Mandalorian in 2021. Though Hamill filmed the scenes himself, computer imaging was used to digitally de-age him to match the show’s timeline.

During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning that same year, Hamill strongly suggested that we have seen the last of him as Luke.

“I had my time, and that’s good, but that’s enough,” he said. “You never say never, but I just don’t see any reason to [play Luke again], let me put it that way. They have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore.”
