Maria Shriver Slams Harrison Butker After Controversial Graduation Speech: 'Demeaning to Women'

The backlash from Chiefs player Harrison Butker’s highly controversial graduation speech continues — and this time Maria Shriver took time to call him out.

Posting to X, formally known as Twitter, Shriver, 68, didn’t hold back as she took Butker, 28, to task for his speech at Benedictine College on Saturday, May 11, in which he attacked working women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, abortion rights, IVF and more.

“As a woman who has leaned into my vocation of living a meaningful life inside and outside the home to not only raise good humans but also raise up our country in various ways, I think it’s demeaning to women to imply that their choices outside of wife and motherhood pale in comparison to that of a homemaker,” she wrote.

“It took a revolution to get women the right to vote, to get women birth control pills, to get women to be able to put their names on a checking account, to get them maternity leave, to get them anything close to pay equity, to get elected to office, to get them where they are today!,” Shriver added.

Shriver then noted that while Butker is entitled to free speech, people also have the right to disagree with his views. “Everyone has the right to free speech in our country…But those of us who are women and who have a voice have the right to disagree with Butker.”

Shriver also pointed out that while Butker’s wife has the luxury to be a stay-at-home mom, many American women do not because they have “to put food on the table.”

She ended her message, writing, “I will not tell Mr. Butker to stick to kicking, but I would suggest next time he speaks to women first and listen to someone with a clearer take on where most women find themselves in 2024.”

In a statement to PEOPLE, NFL senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer Jonathan Beane said that Butker's views do not align with the NFL.

“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

Additionally, former Kansas City commissioner Justice Horn also slammed Butker in a post, writing, "Harrison Butker doesn’t represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members."

During his speech, Butker said there have been “diabolical lies told to women” about working rather than becoming homemakers, and offered his take on abortion, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy. He also said Pride Month represented "deadly sins."

Then, seeking out the men in the audience, the kicker advised them to “be unapologetic in your masculinity," and to "fight against the cultural emasculation of men."
