Marcus Rashford has issued a brief message in the aftermath of the heavy defeat Man Utd suffered to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

Despite Man Utd being above their rivals in the table, they suffered a 7-0 defeat upon their trip to Anfield. It was one of the most remarkable scorelines in the history of their rivalry. Indeed, it is one of United’s worst ever results against anyone.

They have built up some credit thanks to winning the Carabao Cup this season. However, a defeat of that magnitude in such an important league game, given the rivalry between the two sides, will take time to recover from.

Several pundits have already weighed in on the situation, as expected. Roy Keane took aim at six players, for example, while Paul Scholes named and shamed one for a repeated mistake.

Some members of the squad have had their own say on the debacle. Now, Rashford – who started the match and lasted 85 minutes before being replaced by Anthony Elanga, when the score was 6-0 – has added his voice to the reaction.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote on Monday afternoon: “I wish we could play a game today to try and put things right.

“The result is the result, and we can’t see past that!

“We must not let it define our season. We have to trust the process and stick together.”

Marcus Rashford ready to bounce back with Man Utd

Rather than being able to play again straight away, Man Utd will have to try and bounce back on Thursday, when they host Real Betis in the Europa League.

Their next Premier League game after that will be against relegation-threatened Southampton on Sunday, March 12. Both games will be back at their Old Trafford base.

As Rashford alluded to, they will have to try and restore the sense of positivity they were building. Even after that drubbing, they remain third in the Premier League table. Qualifying for the Champions League next season still looks likely.

There has been progress at Old Trafford this season – including with Rashford’s individual form, since he has scored 25 times in all competitions so far – but Erik ten Hag is clearly still in the process of evolving their fortunes in the long term.

The fall-out from the Liverpool loss isn’t going to stop any time soon, so it is no wonder Rashford would rather be back in action to put it behind them. There may be a few more days of inquisitions to put up with, though, at this rate.
