Maradona's 'Hand of God' shirt sold for $8.93 mln
STORY: This Diego Maradona jersey just sold for $8.93 million
It's a new record for sports memorabilia
Maradona wore it in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England
when he scored two of the most famous goals ever
One was from a punch, known as the ‘Hand of God’ goal
In the other, he dribbled from his own half to score
a goal widely considered one of the greatest in World Cup history
England midfielder Steve Hodge held on to the jersey after the game
SOTHEBY'S HEAD OF STREETWEAR AND MODERN COLLECTIBLES, BRAHM WACHTER, SAYING:
"The auction came about as Steve Hodge, who flicked the ball to Maradona on the Hand of God play had had this in his possession ever since the game. He had loaned it to the National Football Museum. And after having it for a considerable amount of time he decided the timing was right and he contacted us for auction."
Sotheby's said the buyer was anonymous
The sale beat the previous record sale for sports memorabilia
An original 1892 manuscript of the Olympic Manifesto
went for $8.8 million in 2019
