Mandy Moore Teams Up with TJ Maxx for Empowering Campaign to Buck Labels: 'I Contain Multitudes' (Exclusive)

The actress, singer and mom kicked off “Claim Your And," a program designed to encourage women to define themselves on their own terms

The This Is Us star, 40, launched the "Claim Your And" campaign with TJ Maxx on June 25 to encourage women to define themselves on their own terms, and she exclusively tells PEOPLE that her desire to be involved comes from firsthand experience.

“I, for one, am someone who's been confined to labels my entire life and career as a young person. I don't think I've had an interview where someone hasn't asked me, ‘Are you an actress or are you a singer?’ And I'm like, ‘I'm both. I'm all those things,’” Moore says.

The "Claim Your And" campaign is TJ Maxx’s answer to society’s penchant for putting women into perfect, often singular boxes — this or that — when in fact, as Moore points out, we should be “eliminating ‘or’ from the equation.”

"I think since stepping into motherhood and parenthood in the last few years, it makes me even more passionate and empowered to want to claim all of these different identities and all these different sides of myself because I know I contain multitudes, as all of us women do,” she says.

“I want to be an actress and a writer and a producer and a mom and a best friend and a wife and all of the things, and I love that TJ Maxx recognizes that.”

Moore, who shares sons Gus, 3, and Ozzie, 19 months, with husband Taylor Goldsmith, recently announced that the couple is expecting their third child — this time a girl!

She’s also busy with her new This Is Us rewatch podcast called That Was Us, and the multi-hyphenate says that nurturing these different parts of herself comes mostly from a place of “grace.”

“I think it's about recognizing [that] some days you're going to feel empowered and ready to take on the world, and then other days you might not feel as willing to do that or as able to do that,” she says.

Speaking from experience, Moore adds: “Today I'm wearing a more professional hat and I'm at work and it's so much fun and it fulfills me, and yesterday and over the weekend, I was with my family and I was in full-on mom mode, and then there are going to be those other days where you're split between a couple of those things and that's totally fine, too.”

“I love that I don't have to make that choice of, ‘This is the only identity that I wear. This is just my singular identity that confines me.’ I can try to be a little bit of everything," she says.
