Mandy Moore Stars Alongside Edgar Ramírez's 'Smoke and Mirrors' Medical Pro in “Dr. Death” Paolo Season 2 — First Look

The once-famed thoracic surgeon, played by Edgar Ramírez in the Peacock's series second season, fell from grace after his innovative surgeries proved to be fraudulent — and fatal

A whole new story is ready to unravel on Dr. Death season 2.

The first teaser for the Edgar Ramírez and Mandy Moore-led season is here, and it offers a glimpse at the horrifying medical professional Paolo Macchiarini. “He is a professor, researcher, and thoracic surgeon, Dr. Paolo Macchiarini,” a voice says in the trailer.

Based on the anthology title alone, viewers can assume this doctor is not quite as esteemed as he’s believed to be. “The work I do, it’s all smoke and mirrors,” a voiceover from the character says.

It’s Moore’s character, Benita Alexander, who questions: “I need to know the truth. What’d you do Paolo? What did you do to them?”

Based on the real-life story of Macchiarini — who was once renowned in stem cell research — Dr. Death season 2 will weave through his medical advances and shortcomings.

In the last decade, Macchiarini became known for using synthetic windpipes in patients using their own cells — meaning, the transplant would not need upkeep from immunosuppressant drugs. But what Macchiarini kept quiet was the life-altering complications from the surgeries that proved the concept was but a dream and wasn’t successful for his patients at all. In the vein of the show’s title, some of Macchiarini’s patients actually died from the surgeries.

Another scandal put the doctor in the headlines when, in 2016, Macchiarini’s affair with Alexander, a journalist who produced the NBC series A Leap of Faith, went public. Dr. Death will walk through Macchiarini’s fall from grace, which led to the swift crumbling of his personal and professional reputation.

Dr. Death is an anthology series exclusive to Peacock, which will focus on a different medical horror story each season. Season 1 of Dr. Death premiered in 2021 — inspired by the true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, and the podcast that recounted his scandals. The infamous doctor earned the title nickname in real life because of the terrifying complications that resulted from many of his surgeries — even sometimes death.

Joshua Jackson played the lead role in the season 1 storyline, with support from AnnaSophia Robb, Grace Gummer, Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater.

All eight episodes of Dr. Death season 2 premiere on Thursday, Dec. 21 on Peacock.
