Manchester United have no intention of selling Cristiano Ronaldo after he reportedly handed in a transfer request, according to David Ornstein.
Multiple reports on Saturday claimed that the Portugal captain wants to leave United to play in the Champions League.
Initially shared by The Times, David Ornstein then confirmed the news. Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Napoli are believed to be interested, though the 37-year-old has not received a formal proposal from any club.
Ronaldo has played in the Champions League for 19 seasons in a row and has scored 140 goals in the competition.
Shortly after his report, Ornstein revealed the club’s take on the situation.
The Athletic journalist wrote on Twitter: “View from Manchester United is that Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale and remains under contract with them for another year.”
While the player wants to leave if the Red Devils receive a ‘suitable offer’, the club appear to have no intention whatsoever of letting Ronaldo leave.
As mentioned prior, the Real Madrid legend has a year left on his deal; furthermore, he is United’s only out-and-out striker in the first team, so it is very unlikely the club will let him leave without having a replacement – or potentially two new strikers – lined up.
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly recently held talks with Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, and the idea of the player moving to Stamford Bridge was discussed, but was not believed to be the focal point of the meeting.
This is believed to have irritated Manchester United, who are particularly against the idea of selling to a Premier League rival.
There is no indication that Thomas Tuchel wants to sign the Portuguese, even after Romelu Lukaku re-joined Inter Milan on loan for the season.
Unfortunately, Paris Saint-Germain are not thought to be interested in pursuing a move, meaning he is unlikely to play with Lionel Messi at any point in his career.
Bayern could make a move if Robert Lewandowski leaves this summer. Barcelona are keen on signing the Poland striker, and the player is desperate to leave, publicly expressing his desire to take on a new challenge numerous times.
