Manchester United are willing to do something they have never done before in their efforts to extend the contract of Alejandro Garnacho, according to a report.
Garnacho is enjoying a breakout season for Man Utd, thriving after gaining the confidence of Erik ten Hag. In 2022-23 so far, he has played 16 times for the first team, scoring two goals and adding five assists.
But with his contract due to expire in 2024, unless Man Utd can activate their option to extend it by a further year, there is a risk that his time at Old Trafford will be brief.
Thanks to his form and potential, Garnacho has emerged as a target for the likes of Real Madrid and their cross-city rivals Atletico (where he used to be an academy player).
With that in mind, Man Utd have been trying to negotiate a long-term contract extension for the winger to fend off interest.
And more details are now emerging about the lengths they are going to in order to retain the Argentina youth international.
According to the Daily Mirror, Man Utd want to give Garnacho the longest contract anyone at the club has ever received. Precisely, they are offering him an eight-year deal.
It would take his commitment to Man Utd up into the 2030s. Of course, Man Utd have had players staying for more than eight years. But never before have they signed someone to a contract of that length in one go.
And their unprecedented decision may actually be off-putting for Garnacho, rather than encouraging. Indeed, the report claims his advisors and family would prefer a four-year deal at best.
Therefore, there is still some uncertainty surrounding the 18-year-old’s future. Furthermore, all parties are not yet on the same page about his wages. The intention is to get him to sign on for around £32,000 per week.
Garnacho contract could contain release clause
Man Utd are still confident that they will not be losing their rising star. But to get him to commit, they are exploring all the different ideas they can utilise.
For example, the report also claims they could insert a buyout clause into his contract. It is not something they would usually do, but may help as a compromise in recognition of the growing interest in his services.
As things stand, it is not clear what price Man Utd would set for an exit clause for Garnacho. Obviously, they are thinking about keeping him more so than his eventual exit right now. But negotiations may mean they have to cover all bases for the long term.
If Garnacho renews his deal with Man Utd, the club will be hoping their faith in him pays off. It seems they are really going the extra mile for him, despite there only being 18 appearances in his body of work for the club so far.
But Ten Hag will want to keep his most promising players around as he builds his Man Utd project. He is getting a tune out of Garnacho at present, so it would surely appease him to be safe in the knowledge that the Spanish-born star will be staying.
There are still some hurdles to overcome before he can be sure that is going to be the case, though.
