An exit-linked Man Utd attacker could end up in a different destination than the one that was recently expected after a La Liga side made a late approach, according to reports.
Man Utd have been finetuning their squad since Erik ten Hag took charge in the summer. This month, they have been gathering interest in a few of their players who could get more opportunities elsewhere.
Ten Hag’s general policy is to keep as many players at his disposal in January as possible. For example, he has ruled out departures for Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay.
But some of the younger members of the Man Utd squad could be pushing for exits whereby they could get more gametime. Not everyone in that bracket has had the same impact as Alejandro Garnacho, after all.
Anthony Elanga may also see his attempts to leave meet a frustrating conclusion. But one man who has been tipped to secure a loan exit is Facundo Pellistri.
The Uruguay international recently made his long-awaited Man Utd debut in a Carabao Cup win over Charlton Athletic. He even contributed an assist, impressing Ten Hag in the process.
Since then, though, the 2020 signing has been linked with another loan departure from the club. After all, he is still yet to appear in the Premier League.
Recently, it was claimed that Flamengo have been in advanced talks to take him to Brazil.
However, it appears they have been hijacked in their attempts to sign him. In recent hours, new claims have emerged about a different solution taking shape for Pellistri.
Calciomercato.it revealed on Friday evening that there has been contact for Pellistri to instead move from Man Utd to Valencia. The source claimed that the deal is “about to be closed”, and further updates have followed.
English sources confirm Valencia interest
For example, the Daily Mail has confirmed that Valencia have made an approach to take Pellistri on loan for the rest of the season.
There is seemingly less confidence in the Mail‘s version of events that Pellistri can leave Man Utd this month. It is reiterated that Ten Hag is reluctant to deprive himself of too many options.
But a move to La Liga might have some appeal to Pellistri. He previously enjoyed two loan spells in Spain with Alaves, making a combined 35 appearances.
He never actually scored or assisted a goal for Alaves in his time there. That said, he was still young and has been showing glimpses of his potential in other moments.
The 21-year-old might be able to flourish more if he gets another opportunity in La Liga. Therefore, Valencia will be hoping to get the best out of him if the deal can cross the line.
Gennaro Gattuso’s side are currently in the bottom half of La Liga, so need to find new sources of inspiration ahead of the second half of the season.
La Liga move may be beneficial for Facundo Pellistri
A move to Valencia would reunite Pellistri with another former Man Utd attacker, Edinson Cavani. As a right winger, Pellistri could be competing mainly with Justin Kluivert and Samu Castillejo for a place in Gattuso’s lineups.
Pellistri remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2025. Until the summer of 2023, though, he could end up playing his football elsewhere.
Perhaps sending him to La Liga will be more beneficial than shipping him off to Brazil. After all, there would be no language barrier for starters.
Keeping him in Europe could also equip Pellistri well for future development with Man Utd. He still has some things to prove if he is to make the grade, but by making a switch to Valencia, he could be kept under the watchful eyes of Man Utd staff.
There seems to be some confusion about how close a deal actually is. But if Valencia are actually close to signing him, it will soon be time for Pellistri to try and hit the ground running at Mestalla.
